ROZUMIENIE TEKSTU CZYTANEGO

Przeczytaj poniższy tekst a następnie zaznacz prawidłową odpowiedź.

I am pretty sure that all of you are familiar with Beverly Hills 90210. Do you remember how Steve was once cheating on a test and everybody was disgusted? Even his friend Brandon disapproved and considered telling the principal. Believe it or not, this is not a fictitious thing fabricated to improve the morals of teenage students. There is absolutely no cheating allowed in American schools. Maybe it happens occasionally, but not as often as in Polish schools. There is one simple reason – if you get caught, you get expelled and your record is tarnished from then on. During a final examination, the professor can walk out of the classroom and be sure that no one will risk looking at someone else’s papers.Like in Great Britain, the majority of kids don’t live with their parents when they go to college. What’s more, they don’t even live in the same state. If somebody has parents who are well-off enough to cover their tuition, housing and living expenses, they are pretty lucky. If you’re not one of these lucky kids, then what? Well, there are bank loans, financial aid and – work. A lot of kids go to school full-time and work to make ends meet. They have to manage their money so that it lasts long enough for them to survive. There’s much more to college life than studying and partying.

Nagranie do dwukrotnego odtworzenia uczniom
(Broszura American History str. 10)

It all started very early in 1848, along the south fork of the American River in California. James W. Marshall was building a sawmill to supply lumber for the Sutter’s Fort. On this special morning, as he was inspecting the millrace, he noticed some yellow flakes. He gathered a handful, placed them on the top dent of his hat and showed them to his boss, John Sutter. It was ‘gold’! Both men tried to keep this discovery a secret but without success. Soon, the magic word rapidly spread to France, Australia and even to China, literally around the world. The ‘Gold Rush’ was on. Thousands of people with ‘gold fever’ flocked to Sutter’s Fort to find their fortune. They came by horse, steamer, and even on foot. Small mining towns sprang up overnight. Most miners built rough huts while others pitched tents in great haste and rushed to pan their gold. It was hard work and most often it did not bring the expected results. Washing gravel in the icy rivers of California was only worth $20 a day for some. For others, it was disappointment. Only a very small group of prospectors averaged $2,000 a day. The most important tool of these prospectors was a shallow-sided, round pan. This pan was filled by scooping the gravel from the river bottom along with water and then gently swirled in a circular or back and forth motion. This washed everything except the heavy particles of gold or nuggets which settled on the bottom.

1. What was James W. Marshall doing when he first discovered gold? ……………..
2. Where did he put the first golden flakes to show them to his boss? ……………..
3. How did the first gold miners come to California? ……………..
4. How much did the few lucky miners earn a day? ……………..
5. What was the most popular tool that was used to separate gold from the gravel?
……………..
